Edge Hill University as Training Camp

On Wednesday 17th September at the Paralympic closing ceremony, Beijing handed over the Olympic torch to the Mayor of London, and the whole of the Olympic and Paralympic movement belongs to UK. This ceremony marks the start of the build up to the London 2012 Games.

In the build up to 2012 many athletes from around the world will come to England to train and prepare for the next games. Sports facilities were invited to apply to become pre-games training venues between 24th July 2006 to 31st January 2007. In March 2008 over 600 sports facilities were selected as Pre-Games Training Camp venues.

Many of these facilities have gone through IFI accreditation and have shown a commitment to ensuring they are fully inclusive.

One of the selected facilities is Edge Hill University located in the Northwest. It has been accredited for both Olympic and Paralympic training camps.

Paul Greenwood Head of Sports Facilities at Edge Hill’s Sporting Edge complex said. “We have a strong sporting heritage in the Northwest. I hope gaining the Pre-Games Training Camp accreditation will act as a catalyst and encourage students and residents in the local community, to become more active and try the excellent facilities we have here at Edge Hill”.
