A number of key developments have been made over the past few years, with the publication of the IFI Equipment Standards - Stage Two, in March 2006, being amongst the most significant.
These standards supersede the previous IFI Equipment Standards - Stage One, which where implemented from 1st April 2004 until 30th September 2007.

Equipment suppliers looking to distribute equipment in association with the IFI must now conform to the new Stage Two standards, which represent a 'raising of the bar' in terms of the features now required from an 'IFI Accredited Item'.

The development of the Stage Two Standards has been driven by the IFI through the Equipment R&D Programme. Consultation with disabled people, fitness equipment suppliers and a range of other health and fitness professionals has been integral throughout the development of the Stage Two Standards. Findings from the equipment testing data formed the basis for the standard, ensuring disabled customers' needs are fully embedded in the specified design requirements.

Continuing discussions with the equipment supply industry have ensured the standards have been set at an appropriate level to ensure reasonable adjustments for disabled people whilst being achievable within current commercial and technological constraints. The IFI has also established an independent panel of equipment experts employed to make key strategic decisions relating to design standards, equipment developments and accreditation.

The IFI's Standards represent the first published guidance documents worldwide on inclusive fitness equipment design. Supplier feedback suggests over 90% of all tenders for new fitness equipment now specify the requirement for IFI Accredited fitness equipment.
