Multi Activity Club launched at The Pemberton Centre following success of Inclusive Taster Day

Friday 4th April 2008

A Multi Activity Club has been launched at The Pemberton Centre in Rushden, Northamptonshire following success of Inclusive Taster Day.

On Saturday 9th February 2008, Cultural Community Partnerships working on behalf of East Northamptonshire Council demonstrated their commitment to providing and enhancing inclusive sport and physical activity opportunities by hosting an Inclusive Taster Day for disabled people at The Pemberton Centre in Rushden.

The event was supported by the Inclusive Fitness Initiative (IFI) and Northamptonshire Sport and was developed to provide disabled people with the opportunity to try a variety of different sports and physical activities and to experience the gym facilities which gained IFI accreditation back in 2005.

The day was a huge success attracting a total of 136 people who were able to sample a variety of sports including Archery, Boccia, Kurling, Trampolining, Table Tennis and Line Dancing, all proving very popular. In addition to this Dynamo Northants Wheelchair Basketball Club supported the event and provided the opportunity for participants to get involved with some Wheelchair Basketball with the hope of attracting some new members to the club.

In addition to the sports activities, the gym was extremely popular with fitness staff kept busy all day delivering free inductions to disabled people. The feedback was very positive with many people indicating that they would like to use the gym on a regular basis despite most having never used a gym before. One group representative summarised their experience in the gym by stating that “the staff are excellent, very confident, adaptable and patient with a good use of equipment. We are looking forward to visiting again”.

The success of the Inclusive Taster Day at the Pemberton Centre has enabled Cultural Community Partnerships to initiate the development of a Multi Activity Club (MAC), which will provide both physical and social opportunities fortnightly including many of the activities experienced during the Inclusive Taster Day.

The Multi Activity Club was launched at The Pemberton Centre on Thursday 27th March 2008 (10am – 12pm).

It is not too late to get involved, the club will be running every fortnight!
