Inclusive Fitness Week 2009

Friday 23rd January 2009

11th-17th May 2009 will see the return of Inclusive Fitness Week. The event will unite fitness facilites across the country providing as many people as possible with the opportunity to experience new activites, or simply to understand that exercise really can and should be for all.

The IFI was delighted with the response from last year’s Inclusive Fitness Week with more than 100 accredited facilites participating. It is anticipated that even more inclusive events and activities will be hosted this year, as commitment has already been made from a number of IFI fitness facilites. The aim of this mass participation event is to target disabled people and raise awareness of the opportunities available. Hucknell Leisure Centre was one of the IFI accredited facilities that participated last year, Fitness Manager Kevan Murray commented,

“Last year we decided to do something a little different at Hucknall Leisure Centre so in addition to offering free tours and gym inductions we also held a Boccia and Biscuits morning which was a resounding success and was consequently implemented into our programme at the facility. We are looking forward to supporting Inclusive Fitness Week 2009 and encouraging even more disabled people to get involved in physical activity.”

Last December saw the inaugral IFI Awards 2008 emphasising to the industry what amazing work IFI accredited facilites are implementing. Inclusive Fitness Week 2009 is a chance for facilities to show the local community the inclusive fitness provision available, to encourage everyone to participate in some kind of physical activity.

This IFI mass participation event supports the government’s social marketing campaign, Change 4 Life.  The campaign encourages lifestyle changes to eat well, move more and live longer. During Inclusive Fitness Week, the information events being held will emphasise how small behaviour changes can be incorporated into people’s lives with a  specific focus on physical activity and what a significant impact this can have.
