IFI User using an Upper Body Ergometer

Central YMCA Club awarded Inclusive Fitness Mark

Tuesday 4th August 2009

Central YMCA Club, in the heart of London’s west end, has achieved formal recognition of its pro-activity in meeting the individual needs of disabled and non-disabled users.

The award of a Provisional Level IFI (Inclusive Fitness) Mark reflects the Club’s commitment to the principles of inclusive fitness and its offering of a functional level of access and service provision for disabled and non-disabled people.

The accreditation follows a £2.8 million investment programme which has transformed the Club into one of London’s most exciting and vibrant health and fitness facilities.

The investment saw an expansion to the Club’s changing facilities, cardio and studio space and GP referral zones. The Club also has a new free weights room, cycling studio, sauna and steam room. IFI-accredited inclusive fitness equipment has also been installed, including lift access to poolside and a pool hoist, enhancing the fitness experience of all visitors to the Club.

In achieving the IFI Mark, the Club was assessed in the areas of facility accessibility and the provision of inclusive fitness equipment. All Club staff receive disability equality training in addition to the training specific to their role, ensuring they can provide a safe, effective and value-for-money experience for disabled people.

Barry Cronin, Executive Director of Central YMCA Club, said:

“Achieving the IFI Mark means our existing and potential new members can be fully assured that our Club has considered their individual needs in terms of the facilities, programmes and customer service they receive here.
I am proud to be part of a team that is dedicated to the principles of inclusive fitness, and strongly motivated to continually improve our service offering.”

Rebecca Morris, Inclusive Fitness Initiative, said:

"The staff at Central YMCA Club have been truly committed to achieving the IFI Mark, creating a more inclusive environment for all users.  The Club is a unique place which not only offers inclusive fitness and physical activity opportunities, but a full programme of exciting classes and lifestyle courses to complement the health and wellbeing of its users”.
