Monday 20th March 2006
The recent success of our sportspeople in the Paralympics and the growth in public interest for these sports has highlighted the vast potential and the benefits of increasing involvement of disabled people in sports of all kinds.
Similarly, the increasing levels of obesity and the growing evidence that exercise can help in rehabilitation and improving health have all put the need to increase accessibility to sport firmly in the spotlight.
The successful London bid to stage the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics, which focused strongly on diversity and widening participation and benefit, has also placed sports for disabled people centre stage.
This, the second EFDS conference and exhibition will examine the latest policy developments relating to both equalities and to sports participation; it will also put the spotlight firmly on practical examples of delivering a difference for disabled people in the field of sport and physical activity. The conference will also act as a celebration of the achievements made by the Inclusive Fitness Initiative (IFI) and a launchpad for future developments. The British Paralympic Association will also stage their Elite Coaches Conference at the event.
An interesting mix of top level plenary sessions, streamed workshops focused on the needs of specialist groups, practical demonstrations and multi-media presentations will bring the subjects to life and ensure a lively, informative and influential event.
Running alongside the 2006 Visa Paralympic World Cup and the Wheelpower Junior Heroes Camp in Manchester, the event will take place in the prestigious new facilities at the City of Manchester Stadium and will provide opportunities for visits to the events. It will also be a feature of Sport England’s Everyday Sport Campaign which, in May 2006, will focus on disability sport.
Speakers will include:
Rt Hon Richard Caborn, Minister For Sport
Steve Cram, Chairman of the English Institute of Sport, Olympian and BBC Sport commentator
Ade Apitan, Paralympian
Colin Chaytors, Chief Executive, EFDS
