Danny Wallace a Triumph Over Adversity

Tuesday 9th May 2006

Ex footballer Danny Wallace whose career was cut short when he contracted MS, triumphantly finished his gruelling six day Marathon walk ahead of schedule.

He had planned to finish on Saturday 29th April but finished instead on Friday… a day ahead of schedule.

The first few days were the hardest for Danny and it was quite poignant to see him joined on Wednesday by his friend ex boxer Michael Watson.  Danny fell, they both stumbled, but their indomitable spirit saw them through and Michael was at the Finish tape to present Danny with his medal.

Danny’s wife Jenny didn’t think he would complete the walk and it was a very emotional end at 5pm in The Mall.  Asked for his thoughts Danny said ‘I can’t believe I have walked 26.2miles through London.  A year ago I was sitting in a chair hardly going out and now look what I’ve done.  You know what they say: where there’s a will there’s a way and I believe that’s true.  It has given me so much incentive to get up and get out again.’

‘When I felt like giving up and was constantly falling over, the support I received made me determined to finish.  I still can’t get over how cars kept beeping and people were shouting ‘Good Luck’.  That memory will stay with me for a long time.  To all fellow MS sufferers … it’s hard very hard but don’t stay indoors get out and about as much as you can.  People do care and talking to them helps – honest’
