Riverside Ice & Leisure Centre, Chelmsford, Free Family Fun Day

Wednesday 31st May 2006

Riverside Ice and Leisure Centre in Chelmsford held a free disability family fun day on Saturday 6 May. The event proved to be very popular with people travelling from as far away as Clacton, Romford and Suffolk. The emphasis of the day was on access for all and the event gave people of all ages and abilities a chance to try activities they may not otherwise try.

More than 100 people attended and took part in a wide range of activities, including swimming, trampolining, football, basketball, dance and ice-skating.

There was also a disco to keep visitors entertained and exhibition stands provided the opportunity for visitors to make contact with local support groups and services, including the National Deaf Listening Bus and Action For Blind.

The day received plenty of positive feedback, Mark Sinclair who is profoundly deaf attended on the day with his two children, wife and some family friends and was quick to praise the event. Mark commented "The day provided a fantastic opportunity for my family to share a day out and try some new activities. We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and are definitely interested in attending similar events in the future."

The next family fun day is scheduled for May 2007.  Volunteer wishing to help out at next year’s event would be most welcome, please contact Chelmsford Borough Council for more information on 01245 606979 add preifx 18001 to access BT Typetalk.
