One Year on for Erith Leisure Centre

The Inclusive Fitness Initiative (IFI) that was launched in June 2005. Since receiving national recognition as an accredited sports facility under IFI, organisations and individuals alike have been extremely interested as to the exciting facilities that Erith Leisure Centre has to offer.

In the past 12 months the scheme has seen over 300 people with a disability inducted in to the use of the Fitness Studio which has resulted in over 2500 visits to the Fitness Studio.

In addition to the IFI accredited Fitness Studio, the Centre also operates a successful GP Referral scheme and has also hosted a number of disability sports events, such as the inter-borough sports day for adults with learning difficulties, held annually in September.

The Centre also recently provided the venue for the ‘Lets Talk Sport’ performance that is written and performed by adults with learning difficulties, and highlights the problems faced by people with disabilities when trying to particpate in sport.

The excellent work that is undertaken to provide leisure opportunities for people with disabilities is not confined to the Fitness Studio and dry-side facilities. A number of initiatives are also in operation within the Swimming Pool. The Centre opperates a swimming lesson scheme in partnership with Bexley SNAP as well as a water reabilitation session with the Headways spinal injuries organisation.

The Centre is currently working towards establishing swimming lessons for children with hearing impairments. These sessions run in partnership with Bexley Snap and Bexley Deaf Association are currently being trialled and are receiving positive feedbcak. The next step will be to train some swimming instructors in basic sign language and then look to grow the scheme.
