Case Study - Ashfield District Council

Thursday 24th August 2006

Mark Betts, became a regular gym user at Hucknall Leisure Centre in Ashfield, Notts in December 2005 a decision that has changed his life.

Mark has always been a keen sportsman and a generally active person, yet when two years ago he lost sight in both eyes, he started to find that there were barriers that meant that this was no longer as easy.

In particular, Mark has found the staff within the centre to be one of the key factors that have helped him become physically active again,

“Receptionists to management were very helpful and of great assistance, seeming to watch over you without in any way being intrusive.  Instructors in particular are of the calibre that allows you to progress at a comfortable and natural pace – whilst still providing a challenge!  They have adapted the way that they instruct me to enable me to create a mental picture to correct my technique and learn new exercises.”

Mark has now been a member at Hucknall for nine months and is really seeing the benefits.  He attends three days a week and no longer sees his impairment as a barrier to participation,

“I now look forward to every visit, even travelling there alone with confidence.  I keep myself fit and have fun at the same time. So much so I no longer view it as a service more as a regular meeting with friends.”
