Members of the public
were invited to visit Westbridge Park Fitness Centre during the launch week,
where trained staff members were on hand to give tours of the fitness suite,
talk through the specialised equipment and answer questions.
One of the regular
user groups of Westbridge Park Fitness Centre is The Clifford Project, a unique
initiative for young people with learning difficulties aged 16 – 25 years. The
project, established over four years ago, offers work based learning with a
balanced and varied curriculum, which includes leisure and recreation
activities to further build teamwork and self-confidence.
Bob Flowers, tutor
support worker at The Clifford Project commented “We have been coming to
Westbridge Park Fitness Centre every Tuesday afternoon for about a year now.
The students usually start their hour-long session with cardio-vascular work
including walking, rowing and cycling, then move onto circuits and weight
training. It is really important for the students, and it’s great for them to
meet the staff and people from the local community. The staff here are
fantastic and give everyone great support.”
The wide range of
equipment at Westbridge Park is suitable for a variety of users, and Stafford
Borough Council’s Inclusive Activator Richard Winnerah, commented, “The
Clifford Project is one of a number of user groups who visit the centre and we
hope that by raising awareness of the IFI facility more people will come along
to the centre to get active! ”
