Equipment
Our gym offers state-of-the-art 'Life Fitness' cardiovascular and strength machines which are easy to use, reliable and flexible enough to adapt to all levels of fitness. With such a variety of equipment you can meet you goals whilst enjoying your exercise. Fully equipped for users with disabilities and helpful & friendly staff on hand to assist you.

Starting
Call in for a tour of the facility where a lively welcome awaits you at this well equipped 'Life Fitness' gym. Book your induction with one of our qualified instructors who will show you how to use selected equipment and ensure that you feel confident and happy about using the gym.

Consultation
Our qualified instructors will discuss your fitness needs & goals & recommend a course of action. Personalised programmes and regular reviews ensure that you get the results you are looking for. Fitness Tests or Personal Training sessions may be booked with an instructor.

Main Pool
The main swimming pool is 25m x 11m with a depth range of 1.0m to 1.8m. The water temperature is 29°C. There is a 3m deep diving pit with 1-meter diving board and Teaching pool 80cm to 1.0 m deep with a toddlers slide.

Hydrotherapy Pool
Our hydrotherapy pool is a unique, purpose built facility, offering a specially heated (to 34°C) swimming pool which is available not only to individuals within the community who have a disability, but also to any person who feels they may benefit from its use.

Sports Hall
We are able to povide many activities in the sports hall. Some examples are badminton, football, basketball, martial arts and trampolining. We are currently in the process of raising funds to buy a hoist that will enable people who use wheelchairs to access the trampoline.

Squash
We have 2 squash courts available for use. All have a high level viewing balcony and are maintained to a very high standard. Booking of the Squash Courts is always advisable.

Café & Bar
Our recently refurbished café and bar look onto the main swimming pool. It offers a wide variety of food and drinks and is an ideal place to relax after your exertions!

Prices & Memberships
Membership options include: individual, family, & off peak. Payment methods include single sessions, monthly & by direct debit.

The instructor will talk you through the various memberships & payment methods to suit your needs and assist you with a Direct Debit application.

Access

Entrance

Is the facility well signed & easy to find?
Yes – Polkyth is situated on Carlyon Road, near the train station. It is well sign posted from all major routes into St Austell

Are there ample disabled parking bays?
Yes there are 8 parking bays – situated in front of the building

Is there a parking charge?
Yes – charges apply from 9am to 10pm Monday to Saturday, but are refundable to Polkyth customers if you hand in the portion of the ticket with red print. Disabled badge holders are exempt as long as the badge is displayed

Is it front door access for wheelchair users?
Yes - there is a flat path from the disabled parking bays to the automatic main entrance doors

Do you have to telephone before to gain entry?
No

Is there assistance available?
Yes - if you would like assistance and use of our pool hoist please ask for the Duty Manager at the reception desk

Is the main desk split level height?
Yes

Is there an induction loop system on the main desk?
Yes - and there is another system in the gym

Has the staff had any disability Awareness Training?
10 key staff received Level 1 training in IFI Disability awareness in Oct 2005 and 4 gym instructors received Level 2 training, which helps them to deliver a safe, appropriate and value for money exercise programme.

Are there any Braille signs in the facility?
Yes – the lockers in our new changing room all have Braille numbers, as well as indented numerals. We also have other raised and Braille signs throughout the facility

Do you have disabled changing facilities & clothes storage?
There are two large disabled changing rooms, in the main changing area, complete with shower, toilet, hand basin and wide changing bench. We also have large family changing cubicles. Our lockers vary in size depending on your need. The hydrotherapy pool has limited changing at present, however we are currently building a larger, more accessible changing area, with more changing beds. This will be open towards the end of 2006.


Activities

What sort of activities are available and are they accessible?
Swimming pools
Access to the pools and disabled changing facilities is through the changing and locker room and the doors are lightweight. There is a pool hoist available for use in the 25metre 6 lane swimming pool and two in the hydrotherapy pool. Please request the hoist for the 25m pool at reception so that the Duty Manager can have it ready for you once you have changed.

Life Fitness Gym
The gym has gained Inclusive Fitness Initiative Accreditation (IFI) and will be launched as an IFI centre on 18th January 2006. There are ramps and automatic doors to the ground floor gym. The gym entrance doors are lightweight and the reception desk is just inside them. There is a qualified Instructor on duty at all times the gym is open. The IFI has accredited a range of fitness equipment so that the majority of disabled people can access a comprehensive cardio-vascular and resistance based workout.

Fitness Class studios
The dance studio runs classes such as Aerocycle, Pilates, Step, Cardio Sculpt, Calorie burn hour, Fitball workout, Circuits, NRG workout, & Boxercise. The dance studio is situated on the ground floor next to reception.

Catering facilities

Is there a Cafeteria or Bar?
Yes – the facilities in both are adaptable to suit the needs of all our visitors, and they overlook the 25m pool.

Are there Vending machines and what do they vend?
Yes - There are four vending machines in the main reception foyer an ‘Pepsi’ drink machine, a multi-vendor selling crisps, biscuits and snacks, a hot drinks machine and a water vendor. In the café there is a multi-vendor selling, drinks, snacks and fruit. All vending machines are easily accessible.

Spectator areas

Are there spectator areas and are they accessible?
The spectator area for the pool is in the café, and is fully accessible. The sports hall has viewing along two sides, one on the ground floor and one up a flight of steps on the first floor. The viewing area for the squash courts is not accessible to wheelchair users.

Retail sales

Is there a shop?
No - A small range of retail goods are available for sale at reception such as swimming costumes, trunks, swim shorts, armbands & goggles, Huggies little swimmers nappies etc.

Emergency Evacuation

Do you have emergency procedures?
Yes - We have written emergency procedures and carry out regular fire drills. The Fire Brigade officer works with us to ensure that the building is meeting the needs of fire regulations and staff are fully trained and practiced in the emergency evacuation procedures.

How would a wheelchair user escape in the event of a fire?
If possible you would make your way to the nearest fire exit. The staff are responsible for clearing their designated areas and would assist you as necessary e.g. using the pool hoist to help you exit from the water. If you have any concerns a staff member will talk you through this during your gym induction or first visit to the pools to reassure that you will be safe
