A gym buddy initiative at Thornes Park Stadium is
helping former professional rugby player Alan Craven regain his fitness.
Alan, who played for Batley and Dewsbury, began
exercising at the fitness suite 2 years ago after a spinal operation left him
in a wheelchair.
Then a year later he and volunteer Paul Barnes were
introduced, through Thornes Park Stadium to the Inclusive Fitness Initiative
(IFI).
Paul helps Alan with his workouts and works with him
to ensure his programme is consistent and kept up to date. Alan uses his work
in the fitness studio alongside physiotherapy sessions at Pinderfields
Hospital. IFI Coordinator Nick Jukes commented,
“The benefits
of this work are very clear. We are all delighted that Alan no longer needs to
rely on a wheelchair. He has regained enough strength and mobility to use his
crutches more and with help he can also walk without the crutches. The effort
and enthusiasm that Alan and Paul show is an example to us all. The rewards
gained for them both are evident to see.”
Thornes Park advertises in the fitness suite for IFI
volunteers, who qualify for free sessions in the fitness suite. Volunteers also
take an online IFI training course.
